Another summer is in the books for Graffiti 2! This summer brought several changes. In the first week of summer programs we had a construction team work on building us an office and storage room in our new location, all while sports camps, Summer Kids, and the GSALT program were going on. We did baseball camp in the mornings and in the afternoons we took the Summer Kids program (20 1st-5th graders) and the GSALT program (20 6th-12th graders) on field trips around the city.
Week 2 was filled with more moving and putting the finishing touches on our new office and storage room, after basketball and cheerleading camp in the mornings. Our goal was to have everything moved from Brook to Beekman by the end of the summer (August 4th) and we had it done in week 2! Week 2 for Summer Kids was a photography class. Each day the kids learned a lesson in photography and went out around the neighborhood to practice. To see some of the pictures, visit our facebook page. Week 3 was tennis camp in the mornings and cooking in the afternoon. The GSALT students spent the afternoons during weeks 2 and 3 learning more about service and leadership in their neighborhood.
Our final week was football and cheerleading camp in the morning and VBS in the afternoon. This was the first VBS for Graffiti 2. We had about 35 kids in the afternoons this week. Friday night we had our 7th annual block party for the neighborhood. We awarded the MVPs from sports camp this summer and had Rich Perez, a pastor and performer of a church in Washington Heights, come and do the entertainment portion of the block party.
In addition to sports camps every morning, we had the Summer Tots program going on at the Beekman building. We had 20 preschoolers (ages 4-completed kindergarten) attend.
